Katitjiny – Week 4 09.08.2021

Week 4 – beginning Monday, 9th August 2021

STEM Day – Wednesday, 11 August

The Millen Primary School STEM day is this Wednesday. As you are aware the children will be sharing what they have been learning in STEM with other classes. As the finale to this day, we would like to invite parents to visit their children’s classrooms to view the excellent work that has been completed in STEM last semester. To make it easier for parents to visit all their children’s classrooms we have staggered the times that the classes will be open to parents. Please see below for your child’s year level and visiting time:

  • 45pm – 2.00pm: Years K, 2, 5
  • 00pm – 2.15pm: Years P, 3, 6
  • 15pm – 2.30pm: Years 1, 4
Reminder for parents of students in Years 3 to 6!

If you haven’t yet completed and returned your child’s interm swimming notes, please get them done now and send them to the office on MONDAY.  The co-ordinator from the swimming pool is collecting all the forms on Tuesday. Spare forms are available at the office.  (If you have paid via Qkr!, you will have completed the required details online and don’t need to return the paper forms.)

Interm swimming notes for students in Years Pre-Primary to Year 2 are due no later than Friday 20th August.

Welcome to our new trees!

It was wonderful to see the whole school come together for our tree planting ceremony on Monday 2nd August – just one day after National Tree Day. The 27 trees were carefully chosen to provide shade, biodiversity, and food and habitat for local fauna. Each Millen class planted their own tree which they will now care for as they learn about trees, and in particular, what is special about their type of tree.

An event like this takes many people, months of planning and a lot of preparation, and we would like to say thank you to everyone who was involved.

Thank you to:

🌳   every Millen student for helping to plant a tree

🌳   our special guests, Professor Emeritus Simon Forrest, staff and students from Clontarf Aboriginal College, and Alton Walley for performing a very special smoking ceremony

🌳    all the staff, family and friends who helped on the day

🌳    the volunteers who came in the rain on Sunday to dig the holes, move the mulch and prepare the ground for planting

🌳    Jeff the Gardener for his advice, help and preparation for the big day

🌳    Millen parent Emma Monk for her vision, forward planning, and months of hard work applying for the grant, researching and ordering the trees and organising the logistics of getting 27 trees happily and properly planted by an entire school community!

🌳    Ms Tamara Hill for growing Planet Millen from a seed of idea into reality, to Ms Isobel Comrie and Mrs Janine Leng for their unwavering support and encouragement of Planet Millen, and everyone who is part of or has contributed to Planet Millen

🌳    And finally, the Town of Victoria Park for providing the Urban Forest Grant as part of their Urban Forest Strategy.

Make sure you check out the new trees on the oval if you haven’t already, so you can enjoy watching them grow as our children grow. We know the school will be a happier, more biodiverse and comfortable place because of our new trees!

Isobel Comrie, Principal
