English

At Millen Primary School, we are committed to supporting every child to achieve their potential. Our English planning is aligned with the Department of Education’s strategic plans, with Business Plan targets based on data from various sources. We implement the Department of Education’s Teaching for Impact framework and use School Curriculum and Standards Authority curriculum support material to guide our teaching and learning programs.

We have developed a consistent approach to the teaching and learning of English across all year levels which reflects current best practices and includes:

  • A cross-curricular pedagogical framework
  • Recommended timetables to ensure all elements of English are explicitly taught
  • Use of evidence-informed resources and teaching strategies e.g. UFLI to teach foundational skills necessary for proficient reading.

Classroom programs at Millen support the progress of all students through employing a range of strategies from Teaching for Impact including daily reviews, goal setting, providing targeted feedback and differentiated teaching.  Individual students are supported with documented plans developed by teachers in consultation with parents.

Our teacher development strategy delivers whole staff, small group and individual professional development. We have two instructional coaches who provide both planning and in-class support to teachers to build capacity and ensure consistency of our whole school approaches. We have three Professional Learning Community meetings each term where year-level teachers collaboratively follow the assess-plan-teach cycle to support the implementation of best-practice teaching and learning strategies.

Whole school approaches are regularly reviewed to measure effectiveness in improving student outcomes. We measure the impact of our teaching and learning programs through analysis of a range of data and continually use this information to guide ongoing development of our whole school approaches.
