Japanese at Millen

At Millen Primary School we offer an enriching Japanese program from Years 3 to 6 delivered by a specialist Japanese teacher. This provides students with the opportunity to develop a love of the Japanese language and culture and create a foundation for their continued language learning in secondary school.

Students will engage in Western Australian Curriculum-based Japanese language tasks to develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Students are given the opportunity to use their learnt language to describe themselves and their personal world in Japanese Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji, in turn, practising skills such as problem-solving, communication and cooperation. All lessons are presented using a variety of teacher-led and peer activities, crafts, and interactive games. Students demonstrate their understanding of Japanese by giving presentations, role-playing, and completing written tasks.

Additionally, we have many opportunities to experience Japanese culture, such as Japanese sushi and miso soup tasting, origami lessons, songs, festival-related crafts and calligraphy.
