Physical Education

Millen’s Physical Education program develops students’ social and emotional development using the gradual model of responsibility model incorporated into our lessons, building strong relationships, deeper understanding of movement and sports, and improving self-worth. Throughout the week the students participate in approximately 2 hours of physical activity with the inclusion of junior/senior sport once a week. There is also added time for classroom teachers to take the students out for morning fitness each day which works to develop healthy minds and bodies and improve student engagement.

Millen Primary offers a wide range of sports. Such sports include Volleyball, Cricket, T-Ball, Newcombe Ball, Pickleball, Lacrosse, Ultimate Frisbee, Basketball, Soccer, AFL, European Handball, Floorball, Hockey, Badminton and Netball. Sports are often updated each year and are ever-changing to meet the needs of our students, such sports this year include lawn bowls and touch rugby, which differentiate to meet the needs of all individuals and support students’ growing bodies and minds in a safe, fun environment.

The Physical Education lessons focus on fundamental movement skills from the early years until Year 6 and include more game-based learning elements from Years 3-6. This ensures the students gain confidence in skills such as throwing, catching, balance, and movement so they can be more successful when they are involved in more game-based learning elements as they grow older. Throughout the school year, there are many opportunities for the students to experience a wide array of sports taught by various professional coaches, such as ‘have a go day’, with connections to our local community so students can engage with sports outside of school building friendships, connections, and improving well-being. Examples include support from local clubs such as the junior Pirate’s Hockey Club, Victoria Park AFL Raiders, and South Perth Cricket Clubs. Also, in combination with Sporting Schools Australia, government funding can be used to provide more sporting equipment for our students and connect with local coaches to enhance student learning and increase physical activity time for each student.

The Millen Primary Sporting Calendar is always in action with the Summer Carnival in Term 1 Week 9 at Curtin University competing against four other schools, the Winter Carnival in Term 2 Week 9, Cross Country in Term 2 Week 10, Interschool Cross country in Term 3 Week 3, the Athletics Carnival in Week 6 and Interschool Athletics Carnival in Week 9. Also, swimming lessons over four weeks for Pre-Primary to Year 6 students every year. This provides students the platforms to strengthen their resilience in a competitive nature, improving skills and enhancing their relationships with their peers and communities around them. Fostering strong, healthy, well-rounded individuals that can become positive role models for the future.
