Katitjiny – Week 5 09.11.2020

Week 5 – Commencing Monday, 9 November, 2020

Children arriving early

Recently the number of children coming to school before 8am (when duty begins) has grown and the arrival times are getting earlier. It is not safe to drop children at school prior to 8am. There is no supervision. Some children have been arriving between 6am and 7.15am. There are no teaching staff on site. Our school cleaners are not responsible for supervising children. Please do not drop your child off before 8am. Thank you.

School parking

Most schools experience parking and traffic issues at pick up and drop off times. These times can be quite stressful for parents, grandparents and caregivers.  It is especially difficult to find parking at Millen at the moment due to building works. But we must remember to put child safety ahead of our own convenience. Here are some tips from the Town of Victoria Park:

  • During pick up and drop off times, use the set down and pick up areas where possible and do not park vehicles in these locations.
  • Park a bit further up the street safely and enjoy the walk back to your vehicle, chatting to your child/children about what they did in their school day.
  • Where possible, carpool with other parents. This will cut down on the number of vehicles vying for parking spots and promote a safer and more enjoyable experience for both the driver and their passengers.
  • If you live close to school, try walking or riding a bike to pick up your child/children.

The Town’s Parking and Information Officers and Rangers regularly patrol around schools. Vehicles in breach of rules risk being fined.

Your Move at Millen

Well done Millen Community!  A survey of how students travel to Millen was completed at the end of last year and again this week with great results. Since installing the new bike cage there has been a 140% increase in the number of students riding or scooting to school, meaning less cars around our school and more kids adopting healthy travel habits! Keep it up Millen.

Introducing Planet Millen

Planet Millen is a group of dedicated volunteers from the school community – parents, staff and local community members. In terms 3 and 4, we have been meeting regularly in Ms Hill’s Art room to brainstorm and discuss an environmentally-sustainable future for our school.

So far, we have been looking at the Education Department’s framework called Sustainable Schools WA and we have specific interest groups working on ways to plan, develop and care for our school and our community.

We are currently working on an Action Plan and once this is complete, we will share further details here.
